Why using embryo freezing?

The cryopreservation of both flushed or ICSI embryos allows the breeder to create a genetic bank with valuable embryos and to plan better the breeding season of the stud farm, starting the season already with embryo transfers and optimizing the recipient mares use.

  • Genetic Banking: Through embryo vitrification, the breeder now can develop his frozen and genetic valuable embryo stock. The embryo stock is a great strategy to provide longevity to importante bloodlines, since you guarantee a genetic reserve from animals that will eventually be sold or, in more unfortunate cases, end up dying.

  • Breeding Season Planning: Another convenience brought by vitrified embryos is related to the beginning of the stud's breeding season, since, with a well-built genetic bank, the breeder can now start the next season with embryo transfers (ETs) and the establishment of pregnancies, not being held hostage to a positive embryo collection before starting ETs.
  • Optimizing the Recipient Mares Lot: After all, is it better to transfer fresh embryos or frozen embryos? This is still one of the main questions for breeders. It is safe to say that both present similar results when it comes to final pregnancy. With flushed embryos, the embryo transfer will happen even if the prepared recipients do not reach the ideal point for transfer. On the other hand, vitrified embryos allow thawing and ET to be carried out only when the recipient is in excellent condition to receive an embryo, thus favoring the achievement of good pregnancy rates. Furthermore, this strategy allows the veterinarian to work with a reduced number of recipients in his establishment, through prior planning of his station according to his embryo stock.
