Why use embryo cryopreservation?

Cryopreservation is the slow and controlled freezing of embryos. The cryopreservation of both flushed and ICSI embryos allows breeders to create a valuable genetic bank. Breeding farms are able to better plan the breeding season, start transferring embryos early in the season and optimize recipient mare use.

  • Genetic Banking: Through embryo vitrification, breeders can now develop and preserve a frozen stock of genetically valuable embryos. This embryo reserve serves as a powerful strategy for safeguarding important bloodlines over time, ensuring a genetic backup from animals that may eventually be sold or, in more unfortunate circumstances, lost to death.

  • Breeding Season Planning: Another advantage offered by vitrified embryos relates to the start of the breeding season. With a well-established genetic bank, breeders can now begin the next season by performing embryo transfers (ETs) and initiating pregnancies, without being dependent on a successful fresh embryo collection before ETs can commence.
  • Optimizing the Recipient Mare Herd: Is it better to transfer fresh or vitrified embryos? This remains one of the central questions among breeders. It is safe to say that both approaches yield comparable results in terms of final pregnancy rates. With fresh produced embryos, the transfer must take place regardless of whether the prepared recipient mares have reached the ideal condition for receiving an embryo. Vitrified embryos, on the other hand, allow thawing and ET to be performed only when the recipient is in optimal condition, thereby maximizing the likelihood of achieving successful pregnancy rates. Furthermore, vitrification enables the breeding manager to run a smaller recipient herd at their facility through careful advance planning of the recipient herd in accordance with the available embryo stock.
