Transvaginal Aspiration (TVA) is a technique in which a licensed veterinarian uses an ultrasound-guided needle to access ovarian follicles to recover immature oocytes. These oocytes are subsequentially used to start in vitro embryo production via Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI).
The breeder can choose to have the procedure performed at their own facility or send the donor mare to a Reproduction Center for monitoring.
To perform TVA on the farm, the veterinarian needs a place with stocks, power and water. Additionally, a laboratory area that is clean and dark is needed for oocyte searching.
